Can't thank you enough for the explination of the notes--I knew it was something like that. With the link you gave with the list of different raga's, this opens a world of musical exploration for me and that is a true gift. Glad I finally got on the internet.

Madhuvanti is a janya of mela 59 (Dharmavati). The scale is:

Something doesn't seem right about the ArOhanam. Are you sure it starts as
N3 S G2
- From: Sree (@ 134.243.96.152)

Madhuvanthi's A/A should be
S G2 M2 P N3 S
S N3 D2 P M2 G2 R2 S

on: Mon Dec 13 15:22:42
Sree:
The scale given in Ragapravaham on page 225 under mela 59 (dharmavati) starts with N3. Even in Raganidhi vol 3, page 100, the arohana starts with N3.

from my notes:
Vinavadini: janya of MK28 (Harikambodhi)
srgpns; snpgrs
Is Samanapriya diff from Sumanapriya? I have a recording of Sowmya in the latter: janya of MK28, srgmgpdps; sdspgmrs.
if you learn about others pls post them here.

I thought that A/A starts with S. I'm surprised that madhuvanthi starts with N3. Are there other rAgams that start with a note other than S?
Regards
Sree

on: Tue Dec 14 09:42:19
Vasu:
You are right about the scale of Vinavadini. There is a raga called samanapriya with a composition by Chitravina Ravikiran but I do not have the details of this raga. There is a composition by Muttiah Bhagavatar in the raga Sumanapriya which is a janya of Harikambhoji. There is another raga called Samapriya and it is a janya of mela 21 Kiravani with the notes S R2 M1 P D1 S; S D1 P M1 R2 S. Again there is a composition by Chitravina Ravikiran.

Sree:
Yes there are many ragas that so not start with Sa. Offhand I can think of Saindhavi which is a janya of Kharaharapriya and has exactly the same notes but starts with Ni. Also Kurinji, a janya of Shankarabharana. I can look up and give you the names of other ragas if you want.
- From: Sree (@ 134.243.96.152)
on: Tue Dec 14 12:48:03
Lakshman:
Well...you are correct. There indeed are many janya rAgams that start with a note other than Sa.
Thanks...

Sree, Lakshman:
From my memory, Chittaranjani, punnagavarali, a janya MK15 starting with N. Anybody know what significance does it bring to the raga if a/A starts with non-Sa?
- From: Vasu (@ 210.austin-03-04rs.tx.dial-access.att.net)
on: Tue Dec 14 18:52:58
Thats Nadanamakriya, starting with N (janya of MK15).

Thiagarajan:
Rageshri is a janya of Khamaj Thaat (Harikambhoji) and has three different aro/avas.
1. S G3 M1 D2 N3 S; S N2 D2 M1 G3 R2 S
2. -do- ; S N3 D2 M1 G3 R2 S
3. -do- ; S N3 D2 N3 D2 M1 G3 R2 S
Natakuranji is also a janya of Harikambhoji mela and two scales are available.
1. S R2 G3 M1 D2 N2 S; S N2 D2 M1 G3 S
2. S R2 G3 M1 N2 D2 N2 P D2 N2 S; S N2 D2 M1 G3 M1 P M1 G3 R2 S

Hi, there is a book Raga-bava-artha research study of various ragas like origin, charactor, raga singing time, some composition in the raga many more interesting things- written by Natyacharyaji. Even his RAGA ALA'PANA OF 225 RAGAS is a nice guide to music learners at a limit. It is available at shiv_ranjani@yahoo.com / or/ natyacharya@vsnl.com Guruji 45 books on music &dance which guide very accurately to the learners. Certainly it won't see your mistakes but shows a good way. for learning ragas .... through keyboard, flute, veena, violin, mandolin even karnatic style guitar. tell to your friends....
