PPN, Narayanan: Thanks. I heard the MS recording and in fact had used it to complete learning the piece - I had not learnt formally certain chakras in the piece. The sree gives a very auspicious sounding refrain IMO.

PPN, thanks for the Ahiri mudra in the MD kriti. The words jana modi-nyam appear in quite an established Sahana Kmlmba kriti, so we are left with 4 options regarding the Todi ( other than suchita words e.g. bodhi etc which can be construed from the set of 8 extant ) .
[a] this major raga has another MD kriti unknown to the populace, possibly his first kriti in it !
[b] some other MD kriti currently under another raga has been tranformed due to historical degradation ( a la NeyPogadakunte or Jnanamosagarada? ) Unfortunately there is already a Todi dhyana Kmlmba.
[c] He is using the katapayadi scheme to rewrite the To-di name. This family enjoyed these games ( cf. the Varnam above by his papa RD )
[d] MD named this ancient raga after the Tamil Pan name Nata-Kokilam !!
This is becoming somewhat like Fermat's Last Theorem. I hope we won't need an equivalent solution to resolve it. Anyway, it is quite interesting.

Are all the following forms of the 'dhaivatam' pronunciation applicable ? dhA, dha, dA, da, duh ?? The swarasthana varnams may be less meaningful if 'dhA' is used in place of 'dA'.
e.g. sadA vs. sadhA ??

Hi:
Having discussed ragam Todi at length, it is only appropriate that we offer our humble prayers to the majestic morning Ragam TODI. Here are a couple of Mangala Stotrams in praise of Ragam Todi (source unknown):

Nado, I guess as long as we recognise that 'da' is derived from 'dhaivatam' and a short form for the same, it is fine, and one need not be too particular about pronouncing it as 'dha' all the time ... Just as shadjam is shortened to 'sa' and never 'sha'... - [ one can apply stricter rules to pronunciation in sahitya words, though ]; it actually is more facile to use 'da', 'sa' etc rather than 'dha', 'sha' etc in 2nd kala swaraprastaram.

S, I've even heard some Hindustani vocalists using 'ray' for the 'rishabam'. I wasn't sure if the softer da/daa were ever used, in swaras.

if the rules for swarakshara compositions
ie reg change in consonant/group/vowel
and groupings(shuddha, mishra etc) apply for swarasthana compositions then it can be permissible and grouped similarly.
a small correction in my earlier posting:
opposed due to pride and ignorance - garima + madha + ari
