Haris,
Does it hurt ask questions? it is much nicer when you find sensible responses to our genuine questions.

Gopal, Haris: Amritavarshini may also be classified as a MechaKalyani or Lathangi janya, based on its pentatonic scale s g m p n s. Why is it assigned to the exotic Chitrambari, which is also a Vivaadi mela ? What are the other janyas of Chitrambari ?

re. Amritavarshini it also appears to be a swara subset of the prati madhayama melas Purvi kalyani and Pantuvarali. Their features may appear in the PatnamSI Amritavarshini 'EnthaNeePuja'.

>>>PatnamSI Amritavarshini 'EnthaNeePuja'.<<< Nado, I have not heard this kriti. However, if u r talking of the Alathur Brothers concert song, it is in mandAri - an extra ri wrt amritavarshini ( s r1 g3 m2 p n3 s' - s' n3 p m2 g3 r1 s ). The kriti is endukituchapalamu.

on: Sun Jul 2 07:44:59 EDT 2000
Hmmm... S, I am not sure if EnthaNeePuja is part of EndukituC. Maybe I heard an old copy. It was indeed an Alathur bros. tape, Sama,EndukuNirDaya-HariKam. etc. I have heard a fine RamnadKrishnan Mandari also of PSI, NinuJerppa..karana. Maybe Lakshman can give the proper text of 'EndukituChapalamu'. Seems like the Mandari 'ri' will indeed make it Pantuvarali janya.
It is not clear if the raga Dev-amritavarshini (j22)was created by Tyg. in response to Anandaamritav etc. or had anything to do with Amritavarshini.

S, .. On hearing Entha(Nee?)Pooja off the musicIndia site, the Alathur bros. use definitely the rishabham. There are also Jhalavarali based versions of Amritavarshini. Perhaps some one can clear this up.

Lakshman, thanks. It might be just Enta Poojala as listed for Alathurs rendition under the music online site. I also seem to think there is a 'varada venkatesa' somewhere in this kriti.

on: Sun Jul 2 23:39:38 EDT 2000
Nado, initially I was not sure of which song u were referring to. The song on the site u mention is from an Academy kutchery of Alathur with TNK, PMI etc, and the song is in raga mandari and misra chapu tala, of PSI. PSI's more famous mandaari kriti is ninnujeppakAraNamEmimanasA.

on: Mon Jul 3 06:24:05 EDT 2000
So PSI has 3 Mandari krities ( ninnujeppa, endukitu and EnthaPoojala ) and none in Amritavarshini ?
Is the MD Amritavarshini=Anandaamrita the Jhalavarali kind ??
- From: Lakshman (@ ppp2667.on.bellglobal.com)
on: Mon Jul 3 08:33:49 EDT 2000
Nado:
Since S has established that it is indeed Mandari I looked up the texts of both the songs and was unable to find the words Entani puja in either of them. PSI has only two kritis in Mandari and a tillana.

Gopal, I am sorry for misquoting the raga name - it is indeed in Amrithavarshini. Check out Sowmya's CD titled "Shanmukhapriya" for this krithi :)

on: Mon Jul 3 13:31:58 EDT 2000
Lakshman, thanks. I notice that S reports that both 'Endukitichapala' and this mysterious 'EnthaPoojala' are in Chapu. Is it likely that Alathur brothers in their duet may have mangled the wording. Such creativity is usually not displayed for the starting phrases. Perhaps the kriti is not PSI's ?

Nado, confusion ! There r only 2 kritis of PSI; and what Alathur brothers sing is endukituchapalamu. This kriti has been wrongly listed ( phonetically similar song name and 'allied' raga ) in the site. I have heard the cassette long back, and what I have written above is based on memory. Lakshman, could u post the lyrics of endukituchapalamu pls, since my memory fails me in certain phrases.

>>>Is the MD Amritavarshini=Anandaamrita the Jhalavarali kind ??<<< Nado, MD's AnandAmritAkarshiNI ( at least the popular version ) is *not* based on the jhAlavarALi based scale lakshman has posted. This jhAlavarALi based scale would sound very different because of the presence of a totally different ga, and additional swaras ri and da. I guess it may be another scale with the same name, which may now be archaic. Lakshman, do u have any kritis in this jhAlavarALi based scale ? Thanks.

S , you are correct. The Alathurs do NOT mis-speak the starting phrase in the online recording. It is indeed Endu-kitu-ChaPaala=mu .. EntanipuJaapaa is phonetically same and the culprit. The web site description is incorrect, as you point out. The Pantuvarali flavor in Mandari from the rishabam is unmistakeable, especially in the violin part. I must confess to my feeling that a similar flavor permeates PSI's Korinavaramu in Ramapriya as well but this could be rendition related as well.
Why is Amritavarshini classified as janya of (vivaadi mela) Chitrambari m66, if so?

>>>Why is Amritavarshini classified as janya of (vivaadi mela) Chitrambari m66, if so?<<< Nado, I have heard from some musicians that long back, amritavarshini, hamsanadam etc employed the shatsruti dhaivatam. Over the years, the shatsruti dhaivatam has been eased out ( except for a few renditions of hamsanadam ). If this is true, historically, amritavarshini would have to go under 66, rather than 65. In present day usage, it can as well go under 65 ( why 65, and not the first occurence of candidate parent ?, one may ask - well, again the very subjective rule of ragachaaya applies ). BTW, the mapping of janya rAga-s to melas merits a diff thread. Eg why should aThANa be under 29, given its current sparing usage of n3, and even more rare usage of g3 ? etc. More egs exist.

S, perhaps Lakshman can comment how old Amritavarshini may be. The mela 51 may have equally strong claim on the pentatonic, as used by MD. I am not sure if MD's notion of this includes the vivaadi swara you mention or if it replaces the Kakali Ni, so the change (ease-out) may have already been in place, if the raga is older.
