KSK: This forum is supposed to be used only for Classical music-Karnatak and Hindustani. There is a forum RMIM which is exclsively meant for light music and film music. Perhaps the Webmaster can verify this.

I think there is some relevance to classical music
when we consider the differences.
Most Malayalam film music directors are influenced
by both systems of Indian music, Hindustani and
Carnatic.
From the early stages Malayalam film music had classical influence, especially Hindustani. Late Baburaj was trained in Hindustani (his father
being a Hindustani singer).
Pure Carnatic in Malayalam film music is a recent
practise. Take for example the movie "sopanam", there are Carnatic Kritis. There is also a
Carnatic-Hindustani vocal jugalbandi in that
movie. Long "alap" (a-kar alap) before a song
originated in the Atrauli-Jaipur school of
Hindustani. Many malayalam songs are enriched
with this Hindustani feature.

Influence of karnatic music on malayalam film songs are great. thesongs helped in propagating karnatic music among laymen audience as well as youngsters who used to run away at the mention of karnatic music. the malyalam songs based on classical ragas sung by KJY, CHITRA & others are always ligering on the lips of all. the efforts by Dakshinamoorthy, raveendran cannot be ignored. The famous sons 'PRAMADVANAM, Devasabharhalam in the HIS HIGNESS ABDULLA are purely classical music based songs and are very difficult to be sung.

The use of chendai in Malayalam music gets boring, these days thappu, thavil, pambai, udukkai, and other native instruments are used in Malayalam music, the sound of chendai is getting old...and boring.
