Hi! Friends

Oh! The great Nata Bhairavi (Sri Valli) and Bhairavi(Raksha betare) -- could listen to them for ever...!!

There is a LOT to talk about DKJ. Where to start and where to end ? He was a living legend and is unique in every aspect. He had a very unique style of Keerthana Renering where he gives every bit of attention to the pronunciation of the krithi without losing the charm or sampradaya of the Raga. The style seems to be very simple but is very complex. One will realise only while trying to sing in that style. I have personal experience in this aspect. He is an expert in Dikshitar krithis and Papanasam Sivan Krithi - a very unique combination and he is one of the top perormers of Ragam Thanam Pallavi. I must say that i have had the good fortune of listening to almost all his concerts for 2 years before he passed away. He is one of very few, the Carnatic Music Field (and lots of his sishyas) has lost at the most inappropriate time.

Did you know htat Sri DKJ hails from Kanchipuram and he used to manage a college mess. Everyday the morning tiffin would be Idly with Milakai podi.
Oneday the students started protesting and refused to have breakfast. Over 1000 idlies which were cooked were rotting.
DKJ got an idea and asked his chef to break the Idlies into small pieces. This was then fried in oil with a few lentils and Coriander. He powdered oats and mixed it with water and added pepper/salt. The idly was named "Kakinada Uppuma" and the chutney as "Masoolipatnam Chutney". This was an instant hit and everything was sold in minutes (on a permium price).

I'm sorry I'm re-entering late. It's interesting to hear about the "kakinada uppuma" episode.
I heard that DKJ is from a place called Damal near vellore ? His fatrher's name is Krishnaswami Iyer?
Well, may be they moved into Kanchi later.
To me , every musician is offering a different taste and essence of Music--- BUT NONE TO MATCH DKS's unparalled diction, Sruthi sutham, PACE!!
More later...

When DKJ was born , it seems his father took the baby to Sri Ramanasramam, Tiruvannamalai. Sri.Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi blessed the kid by feeding honey to the baby and expressed "Intha kozhanthai nalla paaduvan!!".
This I remember was once told by Smt.DKP in an interview -- not sure of the source I heard it from..

He is also called as Cycle Vidhwan. This is because he used to travel long distance by cycle to teach music lessons and while doing so used to practise pallavis and ragam.
I think DAMAL is a small village near Kanchipuram.

DKJ is unparalleled in bringing together raga, bhava and tala. The fact that he survived the unforgiving critics in madras despite his voice giving him trouble at the higher octaves is testimony to his vidwat. it is also commendable that he continued to sing despite his health problem. you can tell, i'm a diehard fan!

i think DKJ's special contribution to CM would be his elaboration of rare ragas as main pieces in his concerts.
examples include natabhairavi (sree valli..) or the saranga(or saranutha?) malhaar (sree mahabala..), etc.
his raga sketches for such ragas used to be so original and so rich in raaga swaroopam and not just plain scale manipulations!

Family history reveals, however, that Jayraman was born as the sixth child to Damal Krishnaswamy Dikshithar and Rajammal. Damal is near Kanchipuram. The family never lived in Damal, but only in Kanchipuram

I have this one. DKJ's rendition is very different and he sings it in the correct pace.
Thanks anyway for asking.
Kshitija Ramanam, Soundararajam, Sri Dhum Durge, Somasundareswaram and Ekamresa Nayike are exclusive "DKJ" Dikshitar krithis.
I havent heard even DKP sing them.

Narayanan, Can you comment on whether DKJ may have picked up the krities you mention from some other source than DKP or if DKP simply did not perform them in public ? (is there a DKP rendition of Shriranjani or the other ragas ) EkambresaNayike is of course quite widespread, as is Shnmkpriya.

Nado:
I have (had) 3 concerts of DKP where she sings Sari Evvare - Sri Ranjani. I have heard DKP sing Sri Dumdurge - Sriranjani.
DKJ, apart from DKP learned some krithis from TL Venkatrama Iyer, Papanasam Sivan, Tanjore Sankara Iyer and a few others.
It seems that DKJ and DKP have an agreement not to sing kithis popularised by the other one.
DKP never sings krithis like Soundararajam - B Saranga, Chanka CHakra - P Chandrika , Sri Subramanyo - Todi, Gunijanathi - Gurjari... and i have not seen DKJ sing krithis like Bhakthuni - Begada, Sallare - Ahiri, and Sri Nadadi - Mayamalavagowlai, krithis popularised by DKP.

Kshitija Ramanam - Devagandharam - Adi is a Dikshitar krithi. DKJ is the only person who used to sing this krithi. He used to sing this quite often in concerts during the 1970s.
