CM doesnt have a fixed frequency like WM has (for eg middle C=240Hz). CM rather relies on relative frequencies, with a base frequency chosen as desired (or comfortable) by the singer/performer.
Looking at keyboard as an example,
The CM Sa could be anykey. Subsequent swaras like R1, R2 etc. will be based on that. When I was learning keyboard, I made a strip of paper. The length of the strip fits into one octave. (eg middle C to upper C). The width is about 1-2 cm. Divide into 12 divisions in pencil, each division corresponding to the width of each key. Fill in the divisons with: "S R1 R2/G1 R3/G2 G3 Ma1 Ma2 Pa D1 D2/N1 D3/N2 N3" - total of 12 divisions. Now place this strip on middle C coinciding with Sa. All other keys will fall into place, for ex in this arrangement, your Suddha Ma (Ma1) will be F and Prati Ma (Ma2) will be F sharp. Note that in my notation R2=G1, R3=G2, D2=N1, D3=N2. Some people use notation R1,R2,G1,G2,D1,D2,N1,N2 with no substitutes.
if you want you can move the strip to some other starting key and play. For ex you can play Mohana (S R2 G3 P D2 S+) with all white keys or all black keys, depending on what you starting key is. Your sensation to hear Mohana will still be same as long as your base key is same.
Hope this helps.

As an additional note, you may not able to play all carnatic ragas using a simple keyboard. in my little experience:
Mohana, Hindolam, Shanmukhapriya, Abhogi etc are identifiable enough; Sudha Dhanyasi, Sriranjini, Reetigowla etc to some extent; ragas like Thodi, Sahana, Anandabhairavi, bhairavi, Madhyamavathi - nope :( - as they depend heavily on gamakas.

Go to page
http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/3030
and choose "Ragam Recognition Tool".
This downloadable software (7 mb) plays the notes for selected ragas and also displays the position in the keyboard.

Paul: One of the best books written on Karnatak raga scales in western notation is 'Ragas of South India' by Walter Kaufman and published by Indiana University Press. A companion book 'Ragas of North India' is also by the same author. Both these books are now out of print in North America (they are available in Indian editions published by Oxford University Press) but may be available through your local library.
