I am listening to Vishwa Mahan Bhatt and Debashish Bhattacharya and would love to discuss their music. There must be others with a similar approach.

Clay,
I haven't heard much of Viswamohan Bhatt and Debashish Bhattacharya's pure classical efforts. Would love to hear more.
Some more indian classical guitarists,
Brijbushan Kabra - hindustani guitar (excellent)
Prasanna - Carnatic guitar (good)

Thank you for the info. I am not sure I comprehend the concept of 'pure classical.' Honestly it is all a new thing to me. I am listening mostly to V.M. Bhatt's "Gathering Rain Clouds" and "Saradamani." I have another cd of Bhattacharya w/Samir Chatterjee generically called "Hindustani Slide Guitar." They are both very different players and I couldn't say which I like the most. I will look for Kabra & Prassanna. PEACE

Clay,
what i meant was, I have listened to them only in Fusion type of albums/concerts.
BTW, Found today that Bhattacharya is actually a disciple of Kabra

Here are some Kabra's recordings. Hope you find it's useful

I have heard "Call of the Valley" (famous one; look for the piece on raag 'Pilu') and his Jugalbandi with Jog. Personally recommend them, if you love Indian Slide Guitar

Thanks for the sites. The Bhatt cds are classical. I have heard some of the fussion stuff and he is a bit egocentric and competitive . . . . Alone he is much more artful. You might want to try "Saradamani." It has 6 songs so you get a better idea of his musical range. "Gathering Rain Clouds" is a more focused effort.

Prasanna is playing Nashville March 13 at the Sri Ganesha Temple Auditorium (521 Old Hickory Blvd.). Suggested donation is $10. Information is availible at (615) 352-8474 or (615) 832-8312. I'll be there so I'll tell everyone how is was. Actually, it's just you and me, RR. This style is really exiting to me. I'm surprized there is not meore interest.

I checkjed out Prasansa's homepage. It is a good site. I noticed he was pictured with a Les Paul (electric guitar) and was a bit perturbed. I emailed him and he said that he will be playing an unmodified Fender Stratocaster (electric guitar) and I was a bit disapointed. Having been around Nashville where the Stratocaster is the staple of all guitar players, I fear that tonally it will be less interesting (for me anyway). To me an electric guitar does not hold the harmonic complexity of a well made acoustic guitar (and in the case of indian guitar a guitar "modified" with sympathetic strings).
Prasana is a Carnatic musicion and I am not as familiar with this style as with the North Indian Classical which I think Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and others are purveyers of.
He also may be more westernized than some of the other guitarist I have been listening too. His site lists JS bach, John Coletrane and Jimi Hendrix as being influential on his style.
Nevertheless, he has the credentials of a fine musicion and I will certainly be at the show. So this is the "pre concert reveiw" and I will follow up with the real review.

Prasanna Played Beautifully
Prasanna played for a little over 2 & 1/2 hours. I wish I could list the ragas played--there were around ten--but not knowing the language and having nothing to write with, well . . . . He evoked a meditative sound even though he is a very fast player. He played an unmodified electric guitar with digital effects not dissimilar to what any rock musician would use, but with these tools evoked a nice tone, and (somehow) was able to effect the pitch of the guitar to a high level of nuance and beauty.
He was accompnaied on the Mridangam by Lakshman Iyer, an artist from Memphis, TN. It was their first meeting, and after less that 15 minutes they played closely together. Iyer recieved a very enthusiastic response for a 20 minute solo that was EXTREMELY impressive.
The Sri Ganesha Temple/ Hindu Cultural Center of Tennessee sponsors concerts of Carnatic music on average of about one a month. If anyone in this area is interested, they send out flyers anouncing the concerts. Upcoming concerts are Jayanthi Ravikiran (Veena) and Charumathi Ramachandran (Vocal). Anyone interested can contact them at (615) 356-4182.

I would love to go to Madras--if i could ever afford it.
I really got turned on to Indian music by the Ry Cooder / V.M. Bhatt "Meeting by the River" and it has snowballed from there. I have listened to much of Ry Cooder, who is a modern purveyor of the delta blues, a style which has little in common with what is called "blues" in american pop music.
If anyone could suggest a good carnatic style veena player or album and also a vocalist and i definantly need to hear a few more Tani Avarthanam's I would be thankful.
Also any information on the spiritual or religious signicance of the music. Prassana and Iyer were blessed by the (are the priests or monks or what?-i don't know what to call them) Leaders of the Temple--they sang a chant in unison and offered the musicians lays and fruits. it was a very beautiful way to end such a performance.

i finally found some kabra--"call of trhe valley." it's pretty good. I'm having trouble finding cd's by indian artists and i don't have a credit card to order off the internet so it takes a while to get anything but life is like that.
After hearing Bhattachrarya, Kabra and Bhatt i have to say Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is not only the best of these indian guitarists but is the most lyrical fluid and tonally the most beautiful slide player I have ever heard and as a slide player myself i Have pretty much covered the globe exepting the chinese zither. If he doesn't come to Nashville I am going to pack my bags and head to India or wherever he is to hear him in person.

clay: :-)) Let's hope he visits your place.
In 'Call of the Valley', Kabra's 'Pilu' (well, he dominates in it) is unforgettable.
BTW do you have some your slide recordings online somewhere?

no, i've never played professionally but hope to break out in the next 6 months. But I play . . . there is really not a good name for it, some call it american primitive. sort of like ry cooder. but what I wouldn't give to find a mridangam player to play with. As to putting something on the net, that's a bit beyond my net-capabilities right now. Are you a musician yourself?

welcome Nesh Bhatt, it is good to have some more input on this thread.
RR: yes piloo is very beautiful. My cd (EMI) has three "bonus tracks," one by each of the three musicians. Kabra does "Ghara--Dadra" which is also very nice.
And to you both: my favorite indian guitar piece and possibly my favororite peice of music period is Rag Miya ki Malhar (V>M> Bhatt-Gathering rain clouds). It is full of lightning and thunder, controlled chaos, wonder and beauty.
i also found a site that had some interesting info on Bhatt--on thing being that he had been under the guidance of Ravi Shankar. There were other interesting tidbits but I lost the sites address. O well.
N. Bhatt, you may know of some realeases of the master that i dont. I only have the water lily acoustics stuff. I know there must be more out there (pure classical that is).

PPl Hi. i am not an ardent Classical music lover like u all ppl.U see, it sucks for me and goes over my head. But By the way, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is a just a Magician when he's on with his innovatve creation of Mohan Veena. He has performed many a times in my city, i.e. varanasi and has earned quite a lot of repuation and name in the classical music circles and various Gharanas.

I will be traveling to Southwest India and would like to buy a quality Indian accoustic guitar. Does anyone have any advice as to where I can pick one up and what kind?
