Hi all,
Could anyone please tell me if carnatic musicians (both oldies and the present ones) follow strict diet regimes like drinking lots of water, not drinking milk before a concert, gorgling with warm water/salt and the likes to take care of their voice.
Any response is highly appreciated.
Thanks
Deepak

The subject of care of vocal chords is related to care of mechanical aspects related to instruments. I cannot determine from the percussion or other threads whether carpal tunnel affects the many percussionists, violinists etc. While it is interesting to speculate on whether music stimulates production of certain useful endorphins that reduce these effects, it may be more practical to find out how these artistes warm up/ care for their wrist ligaments. Is there, for instance, any less arthritis in the accompanists ?

I believe some of the best percussionists (eg. Palghat Mani) do have unusual physiological traits way different from normal including the structure of wrist bones (both radius and ulna) and the softer tissues in their fingers and finger tips. This certainly is either to do with vigourous practice during their childhood when the crucial development of these bones occur or is due to the genes in them which evolve over generations contributing to these superior qualitites. As you have rightly said, all performers instrumentalist and vocalist alike suffer from injuries due to overuse of different parts of their body during and after performances. And they take care of them by resting a lot(sleeping their favorite), taking pain relievers, etc.,

Deepak

Nado/Deepak:
Umayalpuram Sivaraman takes extensive care towards his fingers. He apparantly has some problem with them (cracking etc) and uses some sort of a plastic sheet as a cover. He uses some a (special?) powder to keep his fingers dry. Also he never shakes hands with people.

During concerts I use tic tac, strong mints or kraambu to keep my mouth from drying.
