I THINK CHEMBAI IS THE BEST OF THEM ALL. LISTEN TO GURUSMRANA VOLS 1 & 2 FOR INSTANCE, WHERE HE PERFORMS LIVE WITH YESUDAS, LALGUDI ON THE VIOLIN AND PALGHAT MANI ON THE MRIDANGAM. ABSOLUTELY ECSTATIC.

Harish,
I have not listened to the Vols you are referring to but I'd really like to have them. Where can I get those cassettes? If available in Madras, would you please give the address of the (if they an email ID it'll be very convenient) music store so that I can buy them via post. Is the said Vols featured on any online shopping malls?
Please give me the information. You may email me sebank@chequemail.com or uou can post the details on this forum.
Now, for Chembai's musical genius, I too justlike you find no parallel (those who have differing views pardon me)to him. His rendition of swaras is just matchless, esp his handling of atidrutam. he takes you to sky heights during his swaras. And his voice, it rings clearer than brass bells.

Chemabi was known for his good humour.
Once while travelling in a train, a Namboodiri happened to be his co-passenger. The Namboodiri finding Chembai sitting opposite to him asked, "Chembaikkudi ya allayo?"('Oh you are of Chembai village?' meaning whether he is Chembai himself).
To which Chemabi replied, "enikku kudi illa!"('I don't booze!', 'kudi' in common parlance means habit of drinking. 'kudi' in Malayalam also means village as in Tamil).

My father (late) had the fortune of listening
to him, when Chembai sang just for my father
at Tenali Railway Station many years ago.
My father was on duty in the Tenali Railway
station (AP). Chembai had come there for some
occasion and was waiting for the train. Nobody
else was there. My father introduced himself
(as belonging to Mathur a village just next to
Kottayi - Chembai)and requested him to sing.
He just sat there and sang just to satisfy a
lone Rasika. Whenever my father tells this, I
used to see tears in his eyes. Chembai never sang
for money or fame, the Rasika and of-course
Guruvayoorappan were his only inspiration!
A great Mahaanubhaavan of Palakkad.

I have heard Gurusmarana vol 1. It is with TVG (for sure) and MSG (I think). Is the second volume with different accompaniment?
Anyway, the cassettes are superb. His swarams are outstanding, to say the least. TVG has also played quite well.

Sorry, I couldn't disagree more. TVG had also been present no doubt, but the mridangam is undisputably Palakkad Mani Iyer. The violin is Lalgudi and only Lalgudi. Ghatam is Vilvadri Iyer.

Second volume is a continuation of the same concert, where Chembai praises Lalgudi aloud towards the end after he plays Chembai's kathri swarams with the legend himself

The violin may quite possibly be Lalgudi.
Regardless, I can not agree with the mridangam. One can not judge the mridangist by "nadham" alone. Many times, Vellore has similar nadham to Mani Iyer. My main concern is the style. The style itself is not that of Mani Iyer. I have heard cases where he has played quite defferently but this is definetely a stretch. Let me listen to the concert one more time.

Hello Rohan, try vol 2 and then come to a conclusion. It's better than the first vol.

Dear Harish,
That's not a bad idea. Only prblem at the moment is that I do not obtain the cassette. As far as I am concerned, in the first volume, unless Mani Iyer deviated from his style to such an extent, the mridangist can not be him.
