Hello there!
I was delighted to read your nice comments about the Genius of MMI.I'm an ardent fan of MMI and everyday i listen to him as a matter of reverence.A few years back,we celebrated Madurai Mani Iyer day in a grand style in Sri Rathnagiriswarar temple,Besant Nagar Chennai.the function was organised by me under the auspicious of "Valmiki Manram" of which i'm a functionary.Sri TVS,nephew and disciple of MMi have an enthralling concert.i wish to follow up the great MMI's musical contributions by some kind of long-lasting memorial to him.In this line i plan to appeal to the state government to name the street in which MMI lived (karpagambal nagar,luz,chennai-4)as "MMI Street".i request you friends to kindly lend your hands as a matter of gratitude to the great MMI who poured honey into our ears :).as far as mmi is concerned he was the greatest musician-he is the greatest musician and he wil be the greatest musician.i have other plans to propagate the greatness of MMI.
kindly reply and i will further put forth my views and ideas.
HAPPY CHILDREN'S DAY(Nehru's B'day 14/11/2k)
Yours,

First, all rasikas like you as well as TVS should cooperate to persuade the magazine " Sruti" to bring out a special issue with a focus on MMI. ( I have read in one of the past issues that inspite of their requests to MMI's family, Sruti could not get any cooperation. Hence they could not issue a special issue. ) As you know these issues are treasured by collectors and serve as a fund of knowledge. I feel that such an issue will be a great tribute to MMI and , in my opinion, will be more useful to posterity who wants to know about MMI. Naming a street may be psychologically satisfying to rasikas but a collector's issue with articles and photographs is a more meaningful tribute . ( If a premier magazine like Sruti does not bring out issues such as they did for GNB, Semmangudi et al., I think the case for asking for a street name is pretty weak. )

When artists such as
1. Maharajapuram Santhanam
2. Avvai TK Shanmugam
3. NS Krishnan
4. Musiri Subramanya Iyer
can have roads and streets named after them, Madurai Mani deserves at least a lane in his name. The request is most appropriate.
What credence has Sruti got to do with this.

Dear Mr. Venugopalan,
Topic title la muzhu peyar pOdakkoodaadhaa? MMI nu oru abbreviation pOdara aLavukku avasaramaa?:-) Further, MMI is not such a household name (compared to maybe Madurai Mani Iyer). Looks like you are a fan of MMI. Could you please list all those exceptional achievements and contributions of MMI, as well as the difference he brought about in creating an epoch making pre-MMI and post-MMI era, before we start renaming the streets or build statues (and let the birds have a field day)
*************
A special issue of Sruti would answer such a question with opinions of "experts" and list MMI's contributions and perhaps strengthen the request . Have the Musicians' Associations or any Rasikar Assocns in Chennai or elsewhere or Music Academy listed the reasons (apart from the fact that he lived there..) and passed resolutions asking the Govt to name a lane after MMI? Or the MMI Trust in USA which sponsors Music Artists to visit here? So how does one back up the request? A signature campaign? I happen to think that a Sruti issue would make it easier to make such a request to the politicians , backing the request with facts and opinions from many unbiased sources about his contributions. Such an issue can help to focus public opinion favourably. Politicians would want something more substantial than a few letters of support , I think. Even with "facts", I am sure you need the "connections" to make these things happen. I am sure that C.V.Narasimhan, a student of Musiri, played a significant role in getting a street named after Musiri. And Krishna Gana Sabha and others worked tirelessly for Santhanam.

I strongly disagree to put full name. Remove Iyer from his name and put the name as Madurai Mani.
That looks nice.
If he is a big person , why he puts his caste in his name? It seems that he is a Racist

Have any one of you heard the elaborate Thodi aalapani of Kamalaaambike as rendered by MMI. He has explored thodi to such a great extent by delveing into uncharted waters that you then begin to understand what sets him apart from other singers. I have heard the aapalani over a hundred times and I am still going strong. The rendering of the kriti is just as beautiful with excellent kalpana swarams, typical of MMI.

Maye- Ragam Tarangini
Perhaps no one has rendered this song better than he has. How can any person come up with 10 different and totally distinct ways of singing this one word "Maye"? MMI is a great genius.

I notice that MMI always gives lot of importance to percussion and accompaniments also. Hence the songs are "more complete". E.g. songs like "saarasa mukhi" and "Sarasa sama daana" - the whole music flows together - and one can sense bhakti feeling also.
On the lighter side I dont think any other ariste can get away with sounds like "tut tut tut" , "lovey" etc as part of the song. He is truly great !
And Amala - you have got Racism all wrong !! Lets focus on the music and the person.

for kambodhi(Maa janaki)
His kamalaambaaya(Bhairavi)
....

I feel that Madurai Mani Iyer lives in the hearts of his innumerable fans (many of who weren't yet born when he died, like me) better than any other whose name has been etched on some transient street. Without demeaning any other stalwart, I surely feel that his music is eternal and that alone will uniquely carry his name along into the ages.

God! Where have I been all along ? A Madurai Mani Iyer reverence club ? Can't call this a fan-club.
Kartik : I have two or possibly three variations of the Mohana Kalyani you refer to. The best one is but a glimpse of the swaras. Just about two minutes - but that is enough to transport you to the heavens.
General : What is naming a street after him going to do ? His genius does NOT need a street named after him. Please, I'm sure there are other ways of keeping his music and memories alive.
How about setting up a site where everybody can upload/download his recordings ? I would be willing to help set something up.

Dear MMI Resikas,
Pls do not persue the move to name a street after MMI, which is meant only for politicians to carry out this kind of task.
Why not, for instance, as suggested by Mr.Yegneshwaran, Let us all share whatever recordings (or even a small discussion recorded during MMI visit to Calcutta's concert)that we all possess and preserve as precious god's gift?
Regards
S.S.H.SUBRAMANIAN.

hi m.m.i fans,
it was really nice to see so many fans or rather fanatics for madurai mani....his charm and elegance is unconquered and can never be....his sruthi balance and handling of ragas has made him really carve a niche for him....i say that only one who knows something in depth about carnatic music can really relish his alaapanaas, swarams .i am a great fan of his and never miss a day without his music...i was really enthralled by his sarasasamadana in the raga kapi narayani, which the first instance when i listened to him (that was quite some back)and then it was only his music i mostly listen to.....but my favourites still are thaye yashoda(thodi) and vasudevayani(kalyani),especially his handling of the kalyani alaapana.....really can't be described in words.....
i am sure never can the music of this master be conquered for aeons to come. hoping for more comments in this regard,
i too would like to get some concerts of his...if available.i am a student at university of houston, texas

I am an ardent fan of Madurai Mani Iyer - while I have never heard him live, I have the good fortune of being in possession of some good concerts (privately recorded). All like minded fans must share the good concerts so that all of us benefit. My phone number in bangalore is 5260552 and I would be happy to share my collection. Can others too similarly write in ? His music is eternal and incomparable.

Today Ihappen to come across so many ardent fans of MMI responding . Ihave been under the impression that only myself , SRIRAMAN of Pune ARS.Mani presently in Nigeria & Vishnu are perhaps the only true devotees of MMI .
Sri MMI had sung for my First Birth anniversary
on 20-10-1948 for a mere Rs.100 /- at Kumbakonam
and from that day onwards perhaps I became a mad devotee of him . I could not record any of the fifty or odd concerts that I listened to him in person . I had even absented myself for the semester exam at IIT Madras to listen to him over the AIR !
I had with the help of my above friends had managed to collect some roughly 100 concerts of him in 250 90 minutes cassettes
I am yet to get his singing of Mamava Pattabirama , Ma Ramanan ( I only have this Hindolam piece from Charanam ). I am willing to share these with his devotees without any commercial intentions .
