Hello, I live in Scotland and I am interested in getting a book on Carnatic music which explains everything from the very begenning and hopefully it would have an accompanying cd to go with it. Can anyone help, |

I don't think there is such a thing. The carnatic music textbooks are very much written in the style of defining but not explaining.
L. Subramaniam's book 'Euphony' is an exception, perhaps because of the time that he has spent in US he seems to know how to write for a Western audience.
Anothe book is 'The Illustrated Companion to South Indian Classical Music' by Ludwig Pesch. I've had it a while and take a quick look from time to time.
There's also a couple of small books callec *something like* How to Listen to Carnatic Music. Hardly more than pamphlets, one explains the basics of raga and musical forms, the other the basics of Tala. They are written by the father of R Ganesh and R Kumaresh the violinists. Sorry to be vague, don't know where my copis are now.
Lots of stuff on the www too.

If you meant Carnatic 'Lessons' then here is some information:
Bharatheeya Vidya Bhavan of London has a teacher - Smt. Shivashakti Sivanesan, if you phone her she will help you with her educational package of cassettes, CD and books (she normally charges £50/-). If you phone 020 7381 3086 you can get in touch with her.
And if you are willing to travel upto London then Bhavan offers classes. Visit www.Bhavan.net to find out more about their courses.

London is absolutely swarming with Carnatic music teachers! Every street has at least three Tamil schools!
OK, OK, I exagerate slightly, or outrageously, even! But, due to our strong Sri Lankan Tamil refugee community and their wonderful resolve to keep this culture alive here there is no shortage of places to study, people to learn from, concerts to attend.
Thing is, I am sure you could find a teacher in any area with anything of a tamil community. I have no idea about Scotland, but there must be somewhere closer than London.

Have a look at www.carnaticstudent.org. It's the website for an online course in carnatic music. Like you, I've been looking for ways of learning about carnatic music. I am a guitarist, playing mainly jazz. My ears have been opened to Carnatic music by the group Remember Shakti and I would love to learn about the history and sources of the beautiful music they make. The online course seems promising, though I don't have any information about it other than what is on the website. I live in Lanark - not too far from Ediburgh. If you hear of a teacher in Edinburgh or nearby, perhaps you would let me know?

I am lakshmy. my 2 daughters are learning carnatic musisc for the last 8 years . They are giving exams in Carnatic music from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya , Delhi.
For theory purpose: Volume I to VI of South Indian Music by Prof. Sambamoorthy A to Z of music is there in that. U can get it from Chennai address I will let u know later

Now a days so many casettes have been released for beginners by Bombay sisters, for vranam by Smt. Vedavalli etc. hope this infor is sufficient.
