Who introduced the english music instrument in Carnatic music?

The 'British violin players' were Irish fiddle players. So the instrument was heard not in its Western Classical guise, but in its Irish Folk guise. I'm no expert, but I'm told this by people who are eg Dr John Marr.
I wonder why the South never adopted any of the bowed instruments of the North. I should like to hear Carnatic music played on the Sarangi!

...I was discussing this recently with my Mridangam guruji. He was surprised to hear me use the word 'fiddle' --- he thought it was a Tamil word.
