Hi, I'm a complete beginner in this area (Carnatic music). I'd like to listen to some. Are there any seminal works that I should start with? I would definitely qualify as an uninitated ear.

A very brief baptism by fire with say, SemmangudiSI :-)) , before the Instruments may be a good idea. Swaras, sahityam etc. will appear. If you are still sufficiently intrigued after this, the instruments can be useful. Otherwise, hasta-la-vista, baybee.

I would suggest vocal music first before instrumental. Could start with collection of various keerthanas sung by Bombay Sisters,Mahrajapuram Santhanam etc.,(cassettes, CD's).Later could attend concerts and try to identify ragas ,thalas...
Listen to as many concerts as possible--again you will know if you r INTO this very soon after starting.Else you will quit yourself...
