Please share your opinion of duet artists, in general? Senior artists like BV Raman, lakshmanan, more contemporary like Priya Sisters, Bombay Sisters, Hyd Bros. |

though there "seems" to be greater appeal in general when 2 people sing instead of one, one must realize that for the sake of coordination, a lot practice goes into it & hence manodharman is sacrificed ... atleast to an extent, though not so much in raaga alapana but certainly in swaras and improvisations in kritis. a lot of understanding and anticipation goes a lot in improving the quality of the concert.
i, for some reason i cant plumb myself, like duets in instruments more than vocal music.

My pick would be Alathur brothers. I have noticed one interesting point in Alathurs singing and Hyd Brothers singing. Subbu Iyer always dominates the music and Srinivasa Iyer plays the second fiddle, similarly Seshachary always domintes (or is it Raghavachary ?) I think in this way the manodharma part is not that much compromised (atleast for the one vocalist)

speaking of plumbing, husband-wife duets are thankfully scarce, if any. The alathurs were not strictly brothers, whereas siblings might be more easily convinced of one dominating. who is the elder in the Hyd. Bros.

Can somebody throw somelight on BV Raman And Lakshman .I heard them sing at the musicindiaonline.com site and I enjoyed them very much.What is the general opinion of these artists.

Carefully prosaic but neither colorless nor flashy. Probably would have made ideal MD students. (just an opinion )

BV Raman and Lakshmanan hold a BA in music and they got their degree from Annamalai Uty. They had their tutelage under Tiger Varadachariar. Their musical career spanned only 2 decades apparently.
I got this info from the HMV tape of them rendering ghanaraga Pancharatnam accompanied by Kanyakumari and Bhakthavatsalam. Actually I like the HMV releases now adays. They give a lot of info on their in lay cards.
