Why is the standard of recordings and performances by the current crop of north indian classical exponents, vocalists as well as instrumentalists so ridiculously low compered to that of the earlier generation? what has to be done in order to save classical music from the attempts of some established performers to 'popularsise' it, by watering down its aesthetic complexities?

Your question is a bit vague. If the current crop is to include NRajam,Shahid Parvez,Lalit Rao,Venkatesh Godhkindi/Praveen Godhkindi,Sultan Khan,Venkatesh Kumar of Dharwar,Ajoy Chakraborthy,Vidyadhar Vyas, then there is enough reason not to despair. If you feel, however that the best is behind us,it is pertinent to note that every generation has been thinking so.Popularising, watering down ,aesthetics etc are all issues which have a personal appeal which cannot be generalised. The point is that everyone who is involved in the process of music -either creating or listening to-is climbing a scale of maturity.I got sucked into Music by the likes of Bhimsen Joshi and Chittibabu, but much much later I gave myself up to the likes of Amir Khan,Mansoor and MD Ramanathan. The best way to respond to music that one does not like would be to walk away from a performance without offending anyone. All other attempts to Save music would only be futile.

I believe Pt Ravi Shankar also expressed concerns about the music in a recent article.Somehow we need to stop this mass of musicians that comes to the US every year to play substandard music. There are no listeners really. Most people are going to these concerts out of a curiousity. The life style in North America is not conducive to Indian Classical music. It will never evolve here. This is an interesting forum .I will be back.
