The last time in India, I bought a cassette from RPG-Marga-Milestones series from Karaikudi Mani, Sruthi Laya Vol 1.
For fans of mridhangam/CM, this is a must hear.
Side A: is Adi Talam
Side B: Misra Chapu Talam
G. Harishankar on Kanjira is also great.
If anyone has other cassettes vol2- and other non vocal recordings, mridhangam classics please post details in this thread.

and "1947" has a misra chapu song. Actually, despite my earlier comment I do rate some of AR Rahman's music very highly: Thaal[am], 1947, Sangamam and that pretty small song from Roja certainly would not get thrown out of my collection even if it wasn't for my girl-friend. I think that some of this file music is 'fusion' that really works. ARR has a fabulous ability to fuse together North, South Indian, Western, and other music into his own compositions many of which are superb.

According to me there have been only three mridangam maestros as the older generation have seen. I have no experience of hearing maestros of even earlier times.Palghat Mani Iyer, Palzhani Subramanya Pillai and Palghat Raghu are the foremost in the art of giving aesthetic accompaniment to keerthanas and also the way in which they structure the taniavarthanam. There may be several others who play complicated mathematical calculations, but without a sense of aesthetics. While conceiving every pattern of sound on the mridangam, the player must use his creative faculties to make it utmost beautiful to hear.Calculations can be only one of the tools. In achieving a great degree of aesthetic quality it is only the three mentioned above that stand apart and none other.

Mr. M.R.Rakshith,
Perhaps you should listen to more of Tiruchy Sankaran, Karaikudi MAni and Guruvayoor Dorai - absolute class, both for songs and Thanis.
As for playing for songs, Pazhani school stands apart...
Regards,
Subramaniam

Hi Everybody.
Every Stalwarts is having their own way of playing and we should enjoy all. There should not be a complex of who is great and how popular they are. Shri Mani Iyer, Shri. Palani Subramanya Pillai, and Shri, Murugapupathi has started playing their own style and everbody enjoyed.
Later on Shri Raghu Sir, Shri, Sivaraman sir and Shri Karaikudi Mani Sir, started playing there own way of playing for songs as well as for Thani's. I donot differentiate the stalwards. They are great in their own styles. People says that in India " The thopi has fitted for only two people, one for Pandit Nehru and second for Shri. Pallani Sir. Please donot compare the Mahavidwans. We should just hear their playings and enjoy. Also please donot address them in singular, atleast address them with Mr. or Shri.

I met Sivamani when I travelled to India with a fusion group that played the Jazz Yatra Festival. He's an incredible musician and an even more incredible human being.
He organized jams, including us far inferior musicians. He was generous with his time- taking me to a movie studio to meet the musicans who were performing a soundtrack, took me shopping for hip gig clothes, took me out with his bandmates, etc.
A few summers later he visited me here in Albany, New York, and I drove him to play with a number of different groups and individuals in this area. He fit in musically in every situation- duets with flautist Steve Gorn; percussion with Betty MacDonald, Vinnie Martucci, bass, and drums; drumset with fusion band SuperNova; drums and percussion at a jam session in Connecticut. He was a crowd-pleaser and gentleman in every situation, making friends everywhere. Many wanted to record with him, of course. When he played in Woodstock with Betty and Vinnie, Oregon's ex-manager was awed and wanted to introduce him to Ralph Towner and company because Trilok Gurtu was leaving the band. Some of these trips included late night driving while tired and Siva kept me awake by teaching me Indian rhythms! Every once and a while he leaves a message on my answering machine with some of his incredible vocal rhythms. Sivamani's a musician/human being of the first degree- sorry to see him getting bad reviews. Sit down with him sometime and I'll be he'll make you a believer!

Dear friends, I am an amateur of mridangam. From January 9, I visit South India. Anybody knows, in Tamil Nadu, some workshops of this instrument?
Please give me the coordinates. Happy New Year. Francois

Hello Francois,
By workshop I do not know if you meant a place
where it could be repaired or bought or a session
where it could be learnt or practiced.
I assume it is a place where you would like to buy some quality mridangams, or get yours fixed.
The person mentioned below has a shop in Chennai ( formerly called madras ). He is an expert in making the mridangam. He has a flourishing business and can repair or sell you a new mridangam.
His name is . Mr. Gunaseelan,
and his phone number is (44) 4670276
where 44 -is the code to reach madras.
Good luck..
