Girija: I cannot pinpoint your location from your email address. If you live in Chennai or somewhere in India, you get these books from Karnatic Music Book Centre, 14 Sripuram 1st Street, Royapettah, Chennai 600 014. Their email is: kmbc@eth.net

Kartik: Bindumalini is closer to the raga Bibhas than Ahirbhairav. Ahirbhairav belongs to Bhairav thaat (mayamalavagaula) and uses the following notes: SRG-MP-NDS-MPDS / S-ND...P-M...PG-M-PG-R...S (or)R... MRS
This type is one where nishada is omitted. So it is a shadava/sampurna raga.
In the second type of Ahirbhairav MGRS is used. The use of MRS is better than PGRS which is used in the first type. Both types use the vakra sanchara MPG.. In the second type NRS at the end of the avaroha gives gambhirata. This raga is not to be confused with Anandbhairav which also belongs to Bhairav thaat.

Janani Srinivasan: your post was very interesting, so it was a happy accident finding it here! But nothing to do with the topic! Perhaps you would like to start a new topic: I, for one, am always inetested in reading anything connected with mridsangam

Bindumalini has no perfect equivalent in Hindustani music. Both Ahir Bhairav and Bibhas come close to it. I play flute and found that Bindumalini is one of a few ragas suitable to play melodiously on flute. I think Tyagaraja (Enta Muddoo Enta Sogaso) is the only composer attempted the raga Bindumalini. Do you know any other composer who used this raga ?
