Anand:
Avalavaaga popularity illadha oru
aatakaarar Anand. Kaaranam, ivar aadum aatatam,
nanbargolada poi match paartha padi looti adika koddiya aatam illai. T.V illum periya coverage
panna mudiyaathu. Chess uses the brain
power and no active action at all.
But, ivar pani irukkum saathanai, ivar
etti irukkum uyaram, nam ellaraiyum perumai pada
vaikirathu. He is one of the top seed candidate in
the chess world now. This is a great achievement.
What would be our feeling if we have someone like
Agassi with us or a Graf or a maradona or a sergie
bubka? We can feel it when we think of Anand.

Anand may not evoke hysteria a la Tendulkar or even Leander Paes, due to the sheer nature of the sport that he is in, but he has brought chess back to the focus of many an Indian mind today ! There are so many young aspirants from different parts of the country with different backgrounds, for whom Anand has served as an inspiration. To name a few, Koneru Humpy (AP), Shashi Kiran (TN), S. Vijayalakshmi (TN), etc. More importantly, he has placed India firmly in the world map of chess. No question about it !

Viswa,
Well said. It is a real great inspiration. But do you know that he got poor sponsorship
when he was in a great need for it. I dont know
the condition now.
By the way, anybody know how much Chess
is encouraged in India. Clubs, regular matches etc...

Idhayan : As a person who saw the Anand Kasparov matches for the world championship live (courtesy DD. it started the telecast after some fifty percent of the matches were over), i am happy to see a discussion about Anand.
Let us start this discussion by thanking Anand for changing the way people look at chess.
For a country where the game originated , it is very unfortunate that we just have 2 GMs and a few others with GM norms. ( Anand and Barua correct me if i am wrong.) Anand was lucky that he got sponsorship from Ramco and i must say that he doesn't need it any longer. He must be a multimillionaire many times over.
The single most important thing Anand's quest for the world championship has done is that it has definitely increased the awareness about the game. I definitely see more tournaments being conducted nowadays.( i am not even a college player, but i have been watching Anand from the time he won his first GM norm and became a GM.)
it is one thing to play chess at home trying the games you see in paper and from books . but it is altogether a different game at the GM level. This is one game where the preparation ( home work to be more precise ) becomes very important.
It is in this area that there must be support for the players thro sponsorship. Preparation means subscribing to the latest magazines on the topic and playing more games at the international level and having a PC(notebook) with the latest software. This essentially involves lot of money it is here that we have to really support the players.
All this kind of preparation means that chess has to be the most important thing in the players life and they have to turn professionals. Rengarajan Karthik who has won an national championship and represented india at the international level is a relative of mine. But unfortunately he has opted to concentrate on his engineering studies than on his chess becos of the uncertainties involved.
Having a feel for the game is onething and it helps when you start to play the game. But once you begin to play the game at a serious level, we have to be up to date on the latest developements in the game. It is in this area that even established players from India are lacking becos of 'MONEY'.
See what has happened to Barua. I have seen him losing in tournaments to lower rated opponents. Becos of this, his rating will also come down. when asked about this he stated that he is not able to find enough funding for all the magazines.
He is working for some company (Tata steel??). Not being an full time player is definitely an disadvantage, the way chess is being played today. I must say that the governement must step in here and fund these players and take care of their bread and butter and their chess related problems and send them to more tournaments abroad.
Promote chess at school level. The Russians have done this and done it very successfully (ever wondered how the country was able to produce so many GM's. They have an excellent network starting at school level and that is the secret.)It is not an expensive game to start with. Then adopt a talented few and send them to tournaments abroad.
It is a shame that a country with our population has only got this much GM's. Anand has incresed the awareness and it is time for the government to move in and capitalise on this advantage.
Sorry if i didn't answer your Question , but i am passionate about the game and that's why. I can tell you that TN has got a good network/system in place and that is why we have been able to produce some good players.

JR: pravin thipsay is the third GM from india.
i think anand is extraordinarily gifted, no doubt about it. the surprising thing is that in the world of international chess, his attitude and manners are amazing. others like fisher are weird, karpov is not liked by all, kamsky could not take the pressure and so on. but anand is the darling of the chess fraternity ,he is non-controversial, pleasing attitude and is psychologically balanced. he is a soft character but his determination is too well known.
an interesting anecdote: anand rarely gives interviews to general writers. there was a rare interview with sagul in sun tv some time back, and a question was something to the effect of "do u miss losing your childhood, not seeing movies, not mixing with people" and so on. anand looked surprised and said " i have had the best childhood one could possibly get"!!! here is a person who loves what he is doing and is best in what he is doing.
