hi,

i remember reading a venba that said something that compared friendship with water that joins with "red mud". i dont remember the author or the text name. i think it was avvaiyar. (i have seen a kural with the same meaning also). can someone tell me if they know about this 4 line venba?

if you know about the following also, let me know. thanks

1) a venba that ends like
"thaan konda neerai thalaiyale thaan tharudhalal" - its about how coconut tree pays back the water it took and compares it with good friends.

2) a venba that starts like
"atra kulathu aruneerp paravai pol
sutri nirpavar uravallar - angor
??? thottiyum aambalum pol???
?? "

The first one you are talking about is from aganaanuuru. The poet is not known so he is referred to as "the
one who wrote red earth and water" (sembulappeyaneeraar).
The poem is about the spontaneous love at first sight. The meaning is "My parents dont know your parents.
We have never known each other. But at the first sight, we have become one, like the way rain falling on red
earth becomes completely mixed with it." It starts "±ó¨¾Ôõ ¾¡Ôõ Â¡Ã¸¢Â§È¡?" Sorry I dont have rest of
the poem in tamil by heart. Sure someone will post the full one soon. It is a common theme that has been used
in countless movie songs, sometimes wholly inappropriately. For example the rajini movie song, "¦À¡ý
Áïºû ¿¢Èò¾¢ø ´Õ ¾í¸ ¿¢Ä×", he says, "¦ºõÁñ½¢§Ä ¾ñ½£¨Ãô§À¡ø ¯ñ¼¡É Àó¾õ Ð."
But he is singing about his sister!!!!!!! I have heard the red-earth and rain similie in atleast three movie songs.

Both the ¦ÅñÀ¡s you are asking for are from «ù¨ÅÂ¡÷'s ¦¸¡ý¨È §Åó¾ý. I remember many from
them. I once found the entire collection of ¬ò¾¢îÝÊ, ¦¸¡ý¨È §Åó¾ý etc in Madurai project's site.

BTW, Vikram Seth uses Red Earth and Pouring Rain
Vikram as the title to one of his books and has
acknowledges that he took it from AKRamanujam's
translation.

The american lawyers! So they thought the nameless sembulappeyaneeraar will suddenly rise from his 2000 year slumber and demand royalty payments? How come they get paid 500$ an hour for such weird thinking I cant understand. They make manufacturers put little warning stickers everywhere, "Please do not drive the car when the wheel are removed".

1.The 'legal complications' might have been due to the fact that the English title appears in A.K.Ramanujan's book , for which one probably has to get permission from the book publishers etc.
