Saranath,
Now I remember you. You are the person who likes to write in ten sentences what you can say in one. If it is going to take you 2686 words to write a response to me and barely touch the questions that I raised, this medium is perhaps useless to you. You do have something interesting to say, but it gets buried in a mountain of words. Besides, the topic that you want to discuss is best discussed in some other thread. Create a thread under a name such as "Sociological perspectives on Indian caste system" or something like that where we can resume this discussion.

Good to see the interest in the Dalit Literature discussions.
Ravishankar (aka Saranath), I'll
save reading your postings until later due to their length and my time constraints. As a trained sociologist (as per Mani), I'm sure you've presented several alternate theories of how caste systems were formulated and propagated thru the past several centuries, and how we should be viewing the Dalits/ Dalit Literature against this contemporary backdrop with its high retention of the historical elements. Look forward to reading
and responding to your discourse at a later time in the appropriate thread.
Venkat, I think you have a good story plot. I've read your "parisu" short story. I'd encourage
you to go for it and develop this particular plot. I'm actually reviewing the Dalit condition in TN
while thinking about the inner city African-Americans in the US. (My exposure to both has been in the context of social service). Given the small sample and the depth of observation, this cannot be called research. However, there seem to be unmistakable parallels in mindsets and other elements.
I'll be able to talk more about the Dalit Literature after reading even more fiction and non-fiction on the subject. FYI--there is a separate thread in this section devoted to discussions of Dalit Literature.

...(such as Max mueller, who created the llink between Race and linguistic categories and came to regret it toward the end of his life). Some created monsters with an agenda because their protestantism made them analyze hindu society in the same categories as for Europe. Tamil nationalists here, who are so particular about their particularity, why is it they dont ask themselves why the protestant European categories are at all useful in undersatanding British India? Why do they receive this analysis as unquestionable receivesd wisdom. I am talking about Caldwell and his gospel on language. Do you know how Grant, Ellis and a bunch of upper caste scholars in the college at Fort St. George, Madras have played havoc with your received history and how so many of us here are oblivious of it?
