vitu kathai has been a well-recognized form of
puzzle literature for thousands of years in Tamil.
tholkAppiyam refers to it as "pici" (confer other wods such as 'pithir' and 'puthir' for puzzle or conundrum).
Tamils have a unique tradition with this where the vitu kathai has certain prosody associated with it such as ethugai and monai.
This form of literature, as do every component of
the muththamizh, has its roots in folk tradition.

One of the most interesting forms of the vitu kathai usually has two parts where each part is a question in itself
and the answer must be a phrase that serves as teh answer to both the questions.
There are other types of vitukathai also which are of interest too here.
I invite forum members to post any vitu kathais they know.
I start this thread off by posting a vitukathai courtesy of a friend from the kolli malaich chAral who is well versed in this which he learnt from his father:

kIrai vaLarppathu ethaRkAka? - kIzhOr
mElOraich chuRRuvathu ethaRkAka?

I will post the answer after giving others a
chance to solve this riddle.

Chandra
