That's the thing I loved when I read the script, and I think I helped turn up the volume on that a little. I thought that was the key to the guy. And it's actually the key to parenthood and to all your fears. I found that was the place where they all meet, and I wanted to push that.
You said karma is the key to parenthood. How so?
I don't leave my family for too long now. I haven't for the last five years or so. It's got something to do with getting older, I guess. I just don't want to be away.
It can evaporate in a heartbeat, which is one of my greatest fears. Things can really fall apart in your family, so you just want to stay closer. There's more fear attached to that than there used to be.
Is that because you take your responsibilities as a husband and father more seriously now?
Well, that's a funny thing, isn't it? And that's the scary bit. Yes, the fear comes with a greater familiarity, a greater appreciation for what you have and how lucky you are to have it. The sad news is that I probably didn't always have that as much. I think about that a lot. But you make mistakes, and you learn. That's life.
Do you tell your kids about your regrets and mistakes?
I'm a believer in talking about stuff. I fess up to things. If I see them going off the rails, I'll say, "You know, I did that. And I gotta tell you right now, it doesn't pay."
What have you owned up to?
Oh, you know. I got into a car once after drinking too much. And it was really, really stupid. So, I tell them about it and I say, "Don't do it." It's all about showing them the practical mechanics of karma, the difference between right and wrong and how you have to try to take the right road."
