Does anybody know what Barathi had in mind when singing
'Palli Thalam Anaithum Koil Seiguvom'?
It has been argued by a friend of mine.., that
it means 'Build Temples on Mosques'..
And I argued, vehemently against it.. 'Palli' can mean various things...
village, school, a jain or buddhist temple.. and I do not know if it
meant mosque tooo.. but not according to the tamil lexicon...

Enter 'palli' in the search box in the above site..
It is my gut feeling that, in that time 1910 (?) or so
if anybody sang against the mosques.. he might have been
ostracized.. becoz the freedom movement was at its peak and
no known animosity betn.. Muslim & Hindu
and even otherwise, Barathi would have never sang with an ulterior
sense..
any clarification appreciated..

I agree with you that Bharathi would not have stooped to this level. In ancient India, Temples were not just a place of worship. They were the centre of many noble pursuit. They were schools. They were cultural acadamies. All art thrived in temples. You name it. And so they were held very sacred. So much so Avvaiyar says "Kovil illaa ooril kudiyirukka Vendaam". In modern times, Bharathi wanted all schools should become such temples! That is they should be raised to the status of temples! They should be held sacred.. They should be power centers disseminating knowledge to all who seek it..

This topic is a Moot Point.. It has been argued over. You can see the link that provides several responses to the above question.
However, in short, I think Barathi Meant 'Patti Thotti' by 'Palli Thalam'.. meaning 'Build temples in all Rural Places'.. In my view, that seemed most objective. However, there can be a few more interpretations. But not what was suggested by my friend 'Build Temples over Jain/Islam worship places'.. That Is Ludicrous
