Yes there is a tamil version of mahAbAratam written by villiputtUrar. VillipAratam is quite famous but not sure what you mean by "as famous as kambarAmAyaNam". Actually the oldest tamil version of mahAbAratam was written by
bAratampAdiya peruntevanAr, a sangam poet. But his version is now lost. Baratam had a greater influence on tamil literature than irAmAyaNam.
Especially those of AzhwArs. irAmAyaNam is known more thanks to kamban's poetic skills.
Ofcourse you have the modern day version of bAratam from subramaNia bArati in pAncAli sabatam.

Oo. Ve. Swaminatha Iyer had written Mahabharatham in tamil (All Paruvams). Its not very difficult to understand.But its all poems.
I think rajaji's prose version is famous. But i find that too abridged. I am sure that there had been other old prose versions. I have read a very old one (about 15 years ago) - only one paruvam (the one before sabha paruvam). It was so complete and good to read. It even had all the 100 names of 'Gouravargal'. and the stories of bheeman going into the nagaloga (when dhuriyodhana throws him in a river), etc. Even the tamil used in that text was very good. I am almost sure that it was a translation, rathar than a rewrite.

Migavum nandri. My mother said it's not auspicious to have mahabharatam in the house because it essentially deals with two brothers fighting whereas ramayanam is all about love, obedience etc. Probably that's why tamil poets are not enamoured by bharatam as they are by ramayanam.

i am currently reading a novel by s.ramakrishnan, titled "upa paaNdavam". it retells the story of the mahabharatham from a new perspective. I've read about 150 pages till now, and like it quite a bit. i think it is one of the best works in thamizh lit in the recent times.

Apart from VILLI BHARATHAM , Bharathiyar has composed PAANJAALI SABATHAM which covers a good portion of Mahabharatham.It is also Very interesting to read and enjoy.
