Here is a poser to all the members of this forum who provide good, clean and so much food for thought on our language and literature.
1. Has hAsya rasa ever been incorporated in Tamil literature (Iyal only) through several centuries before European influence? (apart from Siledai Vanja Pugazhchchi etc).
I could be wrong but it seems to me Pudumaippittan, Kalki, Bharathiyar and Devan were pioneers in this but only after the European influence?

hAsya rasa ??
could you please elaborate exactly what it means.
here I assume you are talking of 'nakaiccuvai.'
kalki Bharrathiyar and devan came in later days.
some centuries back, kavi kAlamEgam had it a lot.
before that some of the viruththamkaL in vivEgasinthAmani had it, if we forget about the thunpaccuvi in them. (ex.: "aa iina, mazai poziya")
in naladiyar, the lines, "ilvAz pEy" (though wife-bashing, according to the "Anandavikadan 'manaivikkup payanthavan' jokes" standards, this may be a nakaiccuvai) in 'eRiyenRu ethirniRpAL' poem.
what valluvar says through his 'milaivillaatha peN kaamuRRu' also a nakaiccuvai that falls into this category.
rest, When I get the murasu works for me:-((

Thanks for the response and quotes. The rasa theory of 9 emotions which found its application in Tamil literature includes hasya (translate to nakaiccuvai) but probably does not distinguish between wit, satire and other forms of humour and also irony. IMO Siledai of Kalamegam would be wit(little hesitant to include it under humour) and works of kalki included lots of satire. The legends of Birbal/Tenali Raman indicate wit.
I forgot to mention ParamArtta Guru Kathaikal which would be simply humour.
More enlightening on this topic would be welcome.

In such case, I have to accept that I have no idea about hasya rasa in thamiz... may
some literatures like mA-pallavan's maththaLavilAcam, which is fully intoxicated with heavy doses of sanskrit have such rasam.
Hope some other forumhub soul enlighten us.
(btw, Birbal/Tenali Raman legends are tamil or telugu.. like ParamArtta Guru Kathaikal has his creater from Italy?? :-(()
